⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Hiyono Yuizaki
Age: Appears to be 17
Canon: Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning
Canon Point: Hiyono's appearance near the end of Ch. 58

Background: Wikipedia article

Personality: (This app contains spoilers for the end of the series, as well as references to the prequel, Spiral:Alive)

By all appearances, Hiyono Yuizaki is a bold character: She's the president of the her school's newspaper club; a chatterbox who's earned notoriety amongst the students for being the worst kind of busybody. She's a high energy girl who is rough, loud and quick to anger (and punching), and aggressively decides to stick to Ayumu Narumi like a superglued burr. Despite his standoffish personality, Hiyono sees the brilliance he keeps hidden even from himself. Right off the bat, she's at ease in life-threatening situations, confident that he has the smarts to save the day. She keeps him moving forward, even if she has to drag him into her pace to make it happen.

Being curious and resourceful are among her better traits: Anything inexplicable and dangerous inspires excitement instead of fear in her. This serves her well during Ayumu's investigations into murders and later, into the disappearance of his brother and its connection to the Blade Children. Through her research, Hiyono manages to uncover helpful information that helps Ayumu work through the challenges they face. While her determination and effort make her a valuable asset to Ayumu, the means she employs to those ends can be less than admirable.

She's completely shameless and plows forward with little regret for even the most questionable acts: She doesn't think twice about using blackmail to get inside information from a police officer and openly admits to slipping tracking and listening devices on people. Lock-picking is a point of pride for her and she cheerfully brags about her skills. She's also blunt about everything to the point of being insulting, even to Ayumu, who is the object of her affection. She teases him relentlessly, often calling him cruel and heartless but also expressing her devotion with through grandiose declarations of love (motivated primarily by her love of his cooking).

In spite of her annoying personality, Hiyono's constant support is almost too good to be true for him. That's because it is: The Hiyono Yuizaki steadfastly by Ayumu Narumi's side was planted there by his older brother. Her personality is designed specifically to counter Ayumu's introverted, cynical nature and make him open up and rely on her. Her acting manages to convince not only him, but everyone else around them. Even while fighting someone who was essentially raised on a battlefield, Hiyono manages to conceal her true nature and pass as an ordinary high school girl.

In contrast to the force and emotional impulsiveness which she projects, the spy behind Hiyono is methodical. Two years before she even encounters Ayumu for the first time, she takes and passes the entrance exam for the school she knows he will later attend. While going through the typical student routine, she builds her reputation as the infamous lone member of the newspaper club that will give her a plausible reason to invade his life. Even after he enrolls in school, she waits for the right moment to approach him.

For all her calculating, there is still some overlap between herself and the character she portrays. While she admits that some of the major clues that she's provided to Ayumu were fed to her by Kiyotaka, the majority of her actions were based on her own judgement calls. The reputation she earns for having blackmail on everyone in the school is obtained through her own skills. The words of encouragement she gives Ayumu are also all her own, and while putting her faith in him without question started as an order, along the way it became real. While she probably doesn't have dreams of making him her bride (not groom, bride), she has genuine respect for his talents and refusal to give in to despair. Despite the verbal and physical jabs she throws at him as Hiyono, the care she also shows him isn't a lie.

Abilities: As a spy, Hiyono possesses top-notch acting skills, reading people and manipulating them. She excels at covert actions like sneaking bugs and tracking devices into their clothes or belongings, as well as picking locks. She also has hand to hand and firearms training which allow her to keep up with trained killers. Foreign languages also go hand in hand with her line of work and she's shown to be fluent in German, but it's possible that she also speaks more.

Alignment: Throughout the series, Hiyono seems to be prone to emotional outbursts, but it's all an act. Being Hiyono is a job and her real feelings are a neutral calm that's in line with Sosyne.

Other: As Hiyono progresses in Emp, the mismatch between what she says/how she acts and how she feels may become more apparent. For example, she does have sincere respect and affection for Ayumu, it isn't to the extreme of I-would-risk-my-life-for-you-love that she claims. By the nature of her job as a spy, the bulk of her true emotions are suppressed and thus doesn't recognize them herself.
